How I lost 100 pounds using the pancake principle

Hello my friends. Thanks for helping me unpack some of my CPTSD issues from narcissistic abuse by four narcissist parents. I'm feeling more about now to return to the purpose this blog was created, to show how I lost 100 pounds without weight loss drugs or gastric bypass surgery. Tonight I'm going to explain, from an experience I just had, how I lost 100 pounds using the pancake principle. And it dovetails nicely with intermittent fasting and calorie restricting.

The pancake principle is a term I coined to explain why it's so easy to overeat, past satiation. I noticed this early on in my parenting when I would make pancakes for the children's breakfast. Round one went down fast and if asked, the kids would say they wanted seconds. Seconds went down a little more slowly but still they'd say they wanted more. By the third pancake, they were usually full. And there sat the pancakes. So I figured out (yes, I'm a little slow) to only make the third batch pancakes after round two had had time to digest.

Because that's what happens. While you are eating, the food hasn't reached your stomach yet. So you are at that point, still hungry. So part of how I lost 100 pounds was to wait until my food has settled to see if I am still hungry. I often find that I'm not only no longer hungry I'm actually really full. Like now for instance.

I came home from work hungry enough to eat anything that wasn't nailed down. Seriously, the cats were looking tempting. KIDDING. So I made myself a high protein bread sandwich with smoked salmon and lots of vegetables. (about 300 calories, less the parts I shared with the cats) We're Catholic and its Lent so we are fasting from meat, sweets and alcohol. Eating Lent is also part of  how I lost 100 pounds.

I wrote a blog post for my Great Food 4U blog while I was eating my keto sandwich and said that I was still so hungry, I might make myself another one. I rounded off my meal with two dates which are great for curbing hunger, curbing sugar cravings and boosting metabolism. As such dates also help prevent Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes (insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome) After my meal I still felt hungry for about 10 minutes. And then what I ate hit my stomach and now I'm almost too full. On a meal of about 400 calories. Weight loss isn't just about calorie restricting. It's about how, when and what you eat too. More on that later!

September Weight Loss Challenge: Back to Basics on 1200 calorie diet

Hello my beloved friends and followers of this blog on how I lost 100 pounds (without gastric bypass or weight loss drugs)! I began this year issuing a monthly weight loss challenge but took a break in July and August. Now we're back in business with a September weight loss challenge: back to basics on the 1200 calorie diet.

This blog explores how I lost 100 pounds in 2013-2014. I was so overweight that I was showing signs of hypertension, diabetes and liver problems. Ten years later (has it been that long??), I've managed to maintain most of the weight loss. I've yo-yo-ed a few times gaining back some weight. My BMI (body mass index) might contend that I'm slightly overweight again. But I don't place 100% faith in the BMI because there are so many other factors (overall  health, age, muscle tone, fat to muscle ratio, energy level, fit of clothing, the list is to long to rest so much weight on a mere height to weight ratio).

Having said that, I know that my eating habits have gotten sloppy. So for September, I'm refocusing on the 1200 calorie diet that was integral to how I lost 100 pounds without gastric bypass or weight loss drugs. And summer is an easy time to get lazy with eating habits. I mean, c'mon, I live in Ice Cream Parlor Shop Central. There are literally seven ice cream shops in a half mile radius. That's a lot of temptation (one is actually called Sweet Temptations!)

Add to that the BBQs, cookouts, picnics, graduations, weddings, baptisms, Bar Mitzvahs, yada yada and there's always something to derail that 1200 calorie diets. But school starting up is a good time to get more regimented about eating healthier. Funnily enough, next month's weight loss challenge is going to focus on how to fall off the regimented diet but we'll get to that later. There really is a method to my madness, I promise!

Part of how I overcame obesity was to follow a diet plan similar to the one gastric bypass surgeon Dr. Now of the reality TV show "My 600-lb Life" uses. On "My 600-lb Life" people with morbid obesity unlearn (hopefully) life-taking overeating habits and relearn life-giving new ones. There are some things the "My 600-lb Life" doctors use that I don't and vice-versa. Stay tuned for more on what I do and eat to maintain overall weight loss. (some then and now photos for comparison)

March to Weight Loss with cinnamon to lower blood sugar and increase metabolism

Hi friends! Today on this blog about how I lost 100 pounds after 50 without gastric bypass, I'm looking at ways to March to Weight Loss (my monthly challenge). One way was with a simple supplement that lowered blood sugar and increased metabolism. What's this wonder weight loss drug? Well, it's not a chemical. It's something you have on your spice shelf: cinnamon.

I'm not one to tout miracle pills for weight loss or any other health condition for that matter. However, cinnamon (usually taken in capsules), helped me lose weight by imitating insulin, boosting metabolism, lowering blood sugar, reducing stored fat and preventing (in my case actually healing) pre-diabetes (insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome) and ultimately diabetes.

Whew that's a tall order. But cinnamon capsules can do it. They're part of how I lost 100 pounds and avoided gastric bypass. There's a catch, however. I had to use them as part of a low sugar, keto, calorie restricting 1200 calorie diet. Cinnamon capsules aren't a magic pill that lets you eat all the sugar you want and still lose weight or control diabetes.

That's a trap many of us who have struggled with obesity fall into. Patients on "My 600-lb Life" often want weight loss cheats that involve no work and no change of habits. (Some of use even think gastric bypass is a cheat to avoid calorie restricting. Dr. Now of "My 600-lb Life" puts patients on a 1200 calorie diet but many fight him every step of the way. Some "My 600-lb Life" participants have even said they didn't expect to have to lose weight before surgery and that they "can't" follow 1200 calorie diet because they will starve.

So cinnamon capsules should be used as part of a weight loss plan or method to curb diabetes, not as THE weight loss or diabetes management plan. I always say when I share tips that it's "part of"  how I lost 100 pounds. Just as there are a lot of reasons for weight gain, getting overweight and obesity, there are many aspects of weight loss.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more March to Weight Loss challenge tips and the unveiling of April's challenge too!

Note: these are the cinnamon capsules I use. Best price is Walmart Spring Valley.

Is obesity healthy and beautiful?

I don't know what article I opened but lately my news home feed is flooded with the "I'm overweight and hot" articles. Well, they're not actually articles, but more blog posts (truthfully I don't read them so I don't know the source). Anyway, the poster shares her height, weight and photos of herself , declaring something to the effect that even though she is "overweight" or even "obese" many people find her attractive, guys hit on her, etc.

I find these posts disturbing, frankly. Because obesity isn't attractive? No. Because women can't be overweight and acceptable? H to the NO! Because this sad "pick me" attention seeking behavior makes them vulnerable (a little--the comments can be quite hurtful)? What bothers me is them trying to prove that overweight can't be beautiful because men think they are attractive.

This need for validation is concerning, as weight loss blogger. The issue isn't whether women are beautiful despite what the scale says because someone says they are. Beauty goes far beyond looks and I believe everyone is beautiful because we are made in the image of God. The concern with obesity is the multiple health concerns attached.

HAES, Healthy at any Size, says that all bodies are healthy and that no one should work at weight loss unless they want to. Certainly someone who weighs say, 40 pounds more than what the BMI (body mass index calls for) will have fewer issues than someone who is 100- 200 lbs (or more) overweight. But HAES doesn't care how much you weigh, it's all healthy.

I'm sorry but no it's not. The nature of weight gain is to snowball. The more I gain, the incrementally more, and faster, I gain weight. And even if I could stay at just 40 pounds overweight, I would still be predisposed to certain health risks: diabetes, hypertension, back and leg problems, heart problems, liver functioning, even Covid poses a greater threat to those outside the recommended weight.

In shows like "My 600-lb Life" we meet gastric bypass patients who have gained to extremes. But they began at the same place everyone else does and got to that point by ignoring weight gain. And they are riddled with health problems. "My 600-lb Life" gastric bypass surgeon Dr. Now always sees them when they are literally at death's door.

Will the women in the articles mentioned get as big as "My 600-lb Life"? Probably not. But I'm sure the people on "My 600-lb Life" never imagined it would get that bad either. With movements like HAES encouraging weight gain, there's a greater chance of seeing more of these situations. Because it's common for people who are overweight to ignore weight gain. Many are just as overweight as those on the show, but in denial. I know what I'm talking about. Part of how I lost 100 pounds was to open my eyes to how big I was and do something about it.

"My 600-lb Life" Brittani Fulfer shows joy of weight loss but also cost of obesity

Gastric bypass reality TV show "My 600-lb Life" alum Brittani Fulfer debuted (Facebook image) her jaw-dropping 333 pound weight loss recently in a swim suit and it's obvious that the formerly very overweight woman has made huge strides since the days of morbid obesity, thanks to "My 600-lb Life" gastric bypass surgeon Dr. Nowzaradan and his team.

However, the cost of obesity are shown in the scars from knee surgery, that the "My 600-lb Life" participant had to undergo, after literally blowing out her knee from carrying around so much weight. I know how being overweight leads to such problems. I've been sharing how I lost 100 pounds, without gastric bypass, in this blog. And there are multiple health problems, diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, that I no longer have after weight loss.

Does weight loss fix all chronic pain issues? No. Would that it did, but some, such as arthritis, scoliosis and tendinitis are structural and will probably never be completely healed. However, weight loss does improve them. And there is no health condition I know of that weight loss, if being overweight is a problem, won't help.

It's not uncommon for people to blame overeating on pain issues. But the truth is, it's the other way around. The "elephant in the living room" as Alanon calls it, that we don't want to acknowledge, is that obesity damages our bodies. It's not the only thing, of course. I had to have shoulder surgery after getting to a normal weight, because of arthritis and that work I've done caused shoulder injury. Had I still been overweight, the recovery would have been more difficult.

So I rejoice with Brittani Fulfer and anyone who has worked so hard to get better. And I urge anyone who is struggling with weight related issues and/or trying to lose weight to work that program. As Alanon says, practice makes better. Don't quit quitting. I'm rooting for you!

How I lost 100 pounds eating out: Weight loss tips for restaurants

In yesterday's post on how I lost 100 pounds eating out, I got sidetracked on salads and didn't address the many other diet pitfalls at restaurants. The gastric bypass reality TV show "My 600-lb Life" demonstrates the link between obesity and dining out, especially on fast food. It's difficult to find diet food swaps and a lot of menu items actually create the cravings that make us overweight. But you can dine out and still lose weight if you follow these 25 weight loss tips for restaurants. Part of how I lost 100 pounds (without gastric bypass) was learning to navigate such calorie restricting unfriendly situations with diet food swaps.

1) This step is crucial for restaurants in particular and fighting obesity in general. Order water with your meal. Not drinking enough plain water is a big part how we get overweight. You can see the results of this on "My 600-lb Life." The morbidly overweight participants are always drinking soda or other sugary beverages. And water is an appetite suppressant because it fills the stomach.

2) Ask for lemon with your water. Lemon is a good salt substitute, fat burner, system cleanse and antioxidant metabolism booster. It will help your food digest better and prevents dehydration which, believe it or not, you can get from drinking too much water without electrolytes. (Learned that in my recent bout of Covid 19).

3) Skip the alcohol and caffeine before or with meals, or if you do, order red wine. I lost 100 pounds and drank red wine (in moderation) throughout the process. I just factored it into my calorie restricting 1200 calorie diet. Red wine has resveratrol, an antioxidant fat burner which increases metabolism. It's also, however, an appetite stimulant like caffeine so drink very sparingly. Green tea, an appetite suppressant, is the exception. Drink coffee or tea after meals because they do increase metabolism.

4) Eat out at restaurants where meals are served in courses. Fill up on soup and salad to lose weight. Most friendly to the keto diet, calorie restricting, 1200 calorie diet and even intermittent fasting.

5) Ask for salad dressing served on the side and use less. Learn from "My 600-lb Life" Penny Seager, who drowned her salads in dressing then wondered why she failed weight loss after gastric bypass. Yes, keto advises eating fatty foods, but balanced with fiber, fatty acids and protein. Eating too much saturated fat and transfat was how many of us got overweight (diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol) in the first place.

6) Choose vinegar and oil dressing instead of creamy dressings to lose weight and hypertension.

7) Choose broth soup or consommé over heavy creamy soups and chowders for weight loss.

7) Order grilled, baked or broiled entrees instead of sauteed, fried or deep-fried options. Along with sugar, fried foods are a direct cause of diabetes

8) Choose vegetables or baked potato instead of French fries, mashed potatoes, scalloped or hash browns. Ask for light butter on the side. Baked potatoes make pretty good diet food swaps. They aid weight loss by filling you up and providing electrolytes.

9) Skip bread or rolls if served with the meal. Ask to swap a serving of veggies like cooked broccoli which is high in antioxidant electrolytes.

10) Try vegetarian or vegan food swaps. Eggplant Parmesan is just as good, if not better than Veal Parmesan.

11) Trade mayo based salads for vegetable salads.

12) Pick keto preferred parmesan cheese instead of cheddar or saturated fat cheeses on your salad.

13) Skip croutons on salads.

14) Go easy on sauces, dips, condiments and spreads to lose obesity and diabetes. Skip the sour cream on a baked potato.

15) Use lemon or malt vinegar for fish instead of tartar sauce. Lemon can actually reduce hypertension by simulating a salty flavor in a healthy way.

16) Choose broiled instead of deep-fried fish. Diet food swaps # 15 and #16 can can cut calories by 80 percent alone.

17) Trade high saturated fat ranch and sugary BBQ sauce dips for mustard or marinara sauce dipping sauce.

18) Use lemon as a salt substitute.

19) Opt for Splenda or keto approved erythritol for iced tea or coffee.

20) Eat slowly. Do not rush through the meal. This will help you feel fuller.

21) Order from the ala carte menu instead of the full dinner menu; portions tend to be very large in restaurants and it's harder to stay on that 1200 calorie diet.

22) Choose restaurants which post nutrition data on the menu.

23) Vegetarian fish and seafood are sometimes better for weight loss but not as filling. Better grilled fish choices are: marlin, swordfish, grilled yellow-fin tuna and baked salmon.

24) Order sorbet, sherbet or fruit with non-dairy topping for dessert.

25) Choose fresh fruit from the salad bar for dessert!

Surprise things Covid 19 taught me about electrolytes, dehydration, potassium and weight loss

I've been blogging about how I got overweight and then how I lost 100 pounds and recently, about my prolonged bout of Covid 19. Well, let me just say that although Covid 19 was awful and recovery challenging, I have learned some surprising things about obesity, weight loss, calorie restricting, dehydration and electrolytes (particularly potassium).

I got Covid 19 in early May. Surprise! I was scrupulously careful but it is a tricky disease. I'd waited to get the Covid vaccine because I was recovering from shoulder surgery. Thinking, I guess, that it might make recovery worse. Surprise! Turns out I shoulda gotten it right away because Covid definitely made it more difficult.

I lost 100 pounds seven years ago and had started calorie restricting again to lose weight gained back after surgery. Covid nausea and diarrhea did provide me with weight loss but also dehydration, exhaustion, dropped metabolism, lethargy and brain fuzz which have continued through July. Surprise! Weight loss also stalled.

During the Covid fever, I was insanely thirsty but water tasted funny and made me sick. My poop turned orange. My husband (who also had Covid) had brown pee. Surprise! That was dehydration but I was too sick to connect or think to drink Gatorade or coconut water or some beverage with electrolytes.

But it's a good thing that I was unable to lose weight and shake Covid exhaustion because it sent me researching. First, what is dehydration? Lack of electrolytes. What exactly are electrolytes? Calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium. But I was confused. Sure during Covid I was dehydrated. But normally? I drink water all the time and take calcium, potassium and magnesium supplements and drink Emergen'C. What gives?

Well, I started reading labels and surprise, my potassium supplement only has 2% of the RDA, which BTW is 4,000 mg. So I got some Propel but misread the label. It only has 60mg not 60% RDA. Most "vitamin water" has little potassium. The best is coconut water but even Body Armor Coconut Water only has 10% is a 12-oz serving.

So why am I now struggling with weight loss and dehydration when I was able to lose weight before? I think one reason is because I switched from calorie restricting to more of a keto diet. I quit eating some high electrolyte foods (potatoes, beans, watermelon, sweet potatoes, bananas) because they're not keto. So I'm not getting enough potassium, at least, on my diet.

No surprise, most people don't whether they're trying to lose weight or not. That's because most of us, overweight or not, eat the wrong foods. I always source "My 600-lb Life" for roots of obesity.  "My 600-lb Life" patients got overweight and end up needing gastric bypass because of poor diet. Their metabolism is frozen and they end up with diabetes, hypertension, etc.

You never see anyone on "My 600-lb Life" drinking water and always soda. So yeah, hydration is just a small part of their problem, but is it? I think hydration is at the core. I've found that Covid 19, obesity, metabolism (or lack thereof in metabolic syndrome, aka insulin resistance aka pre-diabetes), hypertension, high cholesterol, liver problems, you name it--all can be remedied with proper hydration and balanced electrolytes.

More tomorrow on how I lost 100 pounds and diabetes without gastric bypass using a high potassium/magnesium diet.

How I lost 100 pounds with a fat flush liver cleanse: weight loss protein shake recipe

Good morning, class! Today we're going to talk about a yucky, but very effective way to lose weight (without a weight loss drug or gastric bypass). This method is also good for managing diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) and LDL cholesterol. So what is this magic obesity cure? Part of how I lost 100 pounds was using an antioxidant fat flush liver cleanse. I'll get to the recipe soon, but first some background.

So I think we all get that the western diet (supersize portions of junk food, fast food, over-processed food with little nutritional value) is largely responsible for so many of us being overweight. We don't need a show like "My 600-lb Life" to prove that obesity is rampant. The gastric bypass patients on "My 600-lb Life" are extreme, but not uncommon, examples. And thanks to "My 600-lb Life" we can see the disastrous results of overeating the western diet.

So what does that have to do with a liver cleanse for weight loss? Well, much of what makes us overweight (and gives us diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and liver problems) is stored fat from that western diet. A gastric bypass can slow overeating but it won't lose weight alone. That's where the liver/colon cleanse comes in.

Earlier, I said this was the yucky part of the weight loss show. That's because "fat flush" and "liver cleanse" are sanitized versions (pun intended LOL) for diuretic. What cleansing does is to "power wash" your innards of all that stored fat. And what goes in must come out. A liver or colon cleanse literally makes you poop and pee out the stored fat. It also uses antioxidants to cleanse toxins.

My homemade fat flush recipe doesn't have lots of fancy ingredients and no chemical diuretic. It relies on fat-burning, fiber-based, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. This recipe acts not only as a colon and liver and colon cleanse but also a kidney cleanse which is important to lose weight. It helps control blood sugar and prevent obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol problems.

Here's my weight loss cleanse recipe: (some ingredients I take as supplements and some I mix into a protein shake).

keto MCT coconut oil supplements

apple cider vinegar supplements

green tea with lemon ( I drink this all day)

keto seed and protein bread (I used the Aldi keto protein bread which has tons of fiber from seeds)

Protein shake of plant protein powder, spinach or red cabbage, berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, lemon--rind and all, grapefruit and water). This fat-burning protein shake acts as a natural diuretic. It regulates blood sugar too and actually makes me feel happy after I drink it!  Drinking one a day is part of how I lost 100 pounds!

5 Things you shouldn't do to lose weight--#3 and #5 will surprise you

Hey guys! Back with more on how I lost 100 pounds and today's are weight loss don'ts. Here are 5 things you shouldn't do to lose weight-- and numbers 3 and 5 are going to surprise you (maybe number 4 too).

1) Don't "crash diet." Intermittent fasting is one thing. But you shouldn't practice excessive calorie restricting. Nor should you cut out entire food groups. Ergo, why I'm not a fan of the keto diet. You may lose weight eating all fat and protein and no carbs, but it's not sustainable. Even those with chronic obesity on "My 600-lb Life" are advised to follow a calorie restricting 1200 calorie diet. If you do intermittent fasting, don't do it all day.

2) Don't watch TV or hang out on social media or just online in general. Staring a screen for hours on end is a direct path to obesity because it's so much easier to mindlessly eat. Especially don't watch cooking shows! Even working at home, online, can be tricky because food is more accessible. No one knows how much you're eating and it can be hard to self-regulate. Part of how I got overweight was working at home, in a sedentary job.

3) Having said that, don't exercise too much when you first begin to lose weight. I knew this weight loss tip might surprise you! But this is as per obesity specialist Dr. Now of  "My 600-lb Life." Why not? Because the more overweight we are, the more exercise makes us hungry which makes calorie restricting harder. For sure, get around and move. Just don't do any hardcore fitness workouts till you're further along in weight loss and have calorie restricting (1200 calorie diet is good) under control.

4) Don't eat "diet food" per se. Or at least,  if you use special diet food, read the labels and count the macros. Make sure you're getting enough protein and fiber for the fat and net carb content. Net carbs are an algorithm of fiber carbs subtracted from sugar carbs. (This part of keto, I like). Look for added sugar and avoid fake sweeteners. Watch out out for "lite" (why can't they spell it correctly?) and lowfat diet food. Light bread is usually okay, cuz sugar carbs are reduced. But I prefer keto bread.

5) Run from diet pop, diet sweet tea and other artificial sweetener foods. "My 600-lb Life" Dr. Now and other obesity specialists say that diet pop has the same effect as sugar soda on blood sugar and insulin production. Drinking it can lead to pre-diabetes (AKA insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome) and diabetes. And, because it doesn't have the payout of sugar, it makes you want and therefore eat, more.  I'm still not sure how I feel sugar alcohol (erythritol or monkfruit). Erythritol is a keto favorite and though it doesn't taste chemicalish like monkfruit or Splenda, it does have a weird mouth feel. Or maybe  it's just cuz I know erythritol isn't what I'm used to.

6) Bonus weight loss don't. Don't "ban" any food group. Part of how I lost 100 pounds and diabetes was by eating everything. I did kind of a Zone diet (40-30-30 diet) and didn't nix any food (except soda pop which isn't a food so that's okay). The Zone diet advises balance, ergo the 40-30-30 plate percentage rule. I did eat less added sugar carbs, more fruit carbs and focused on net carbs with fiber and protein balance.

How I lost 100 pounds and diabetes reading labels: nutrition data weight loss tips

Greetings! Ready for another lesson on how I lost 100 pounds and diabetes without gastric bypass? Today's weight loss wisdom to read labels. To lose weight, I had to track calories and nutrition data. But I was also on the lookout for hidden enemies, like HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) and added sugar. Added and even artificial sugar are great pals with obesity and diabetes.

If further proof of how important reading labels is to lose weight, watch "My 600-lb Life. The reality TV show "My 600-lb Life" shows patients' lifestyles before gastric bypass. It's not hard to connect the dots from eating habits, obesity and finally bariatric surgery.  But, happily, we also see dramatic weight loss from changed habits on the gastric bypass diet. Dr. Now's 1200 calorie diet requires overweight folks to count but also read.

Overweight people like myself, have a bad habit of ignoring the nutrition data on foods. In fact, product labeling developed partly to curb obesity and diabetes. Restaurants have begun posting nutrition data. One big step toward weight loss is to stop mindlessly eating and start reading.  "My 600-lb Life" follow-up episodes show successes taking charge of their eating.

Part of how I lost 100 pounds was to read ALL the nutrition data: the RDA (recommended daily amount) part but also the ingredients. I'm counting calories, protein, carbs, sodium, sugar and fat content.  I'm also sourcing where those things come from. Is is transfat, saturated fat, MUFA or PUFA? Where does the sugar come from? How much is added sugar? Is it high fructose corn syrup? I must not be alone because I've noticed that having to list what's actually in products has made manufacturer's more responsive to what people are trying to avoid. Now products are advertising "no transfat" and "no HFCS."

And added sugar and HFCS are EVERYWHERE! Used to be transfat was the one to watch for. Thankfully that's less common now. But even I, a long-timer label reader, get surprised by lurking HFCS and sugar. Today, I noticed, for the first time, that stewed tomatoes have 6 grams of sugar, 3 grams of which is added sugar!

Diet low carb, lowfat tacos and taco salad recipes: Mexican food swaps for weight loss

What is with this crazy obsession with tacos? Mexican food, tacos, burritos and nachos dominate the pub grub scene. They're about to overtake McWhoppers as the fast food of choice. This blog chronicles how I lost 100 pounds and one essential step to lose weight was creating recipes with diet food swaps. Use these diet recipes to swing Mexican food weight loss friendly.

The show "My 600-lb Life" explores morbid obesity. Overweight folks seeking gastric bypass are shown eating a lot of fast food. One overweight "My 600-lb Life" participant had admitted to a $100 A DAY fast food addiction. Mexican food like tacos, nachos and burritos are frequent flyers on "My 600-lb Life" tables.

Made right, like our favorites places in Southwest Detroit (Mexicantown), Mexican food is pretty healthy. But the Taco Bell way, uh-uh. Restaurant food is bad enough, but fast food is basically obesity (diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, liver disease) in a paper wrapper.

Dr. Now teaches his gastric bypass patients to cook at home. That's part of how I lost 100 pounds, cooking recipes with lighter food swaps, beginning with Mexican food. I blame tacos for making  me overweight, LOL!  But I was able to lose weight with these protein and veggie forward diet recipes.

Inside Out Tacos for weight loss

Tacos fail at weight loss in one word: tortillas. And they're very high- glycemic, so avoid if you have diabetes. Switch to low carb keto flatbread with high protein, or go straight keto and eliminate the tortillas chips and shells. Instead of wrapping food in carbs, turn tacos inside out.

Make a low carb taco salad. If you just can't lose the tortilla (raises hand here) toss in a few chip crumbs. OR, my favorite, swap a little frozen corn (cooked or just thawed) or hominy in your taco salad. I hate flour tortillas and love corn tortillas. I found hominy hits that sweet spot with about a third of the calories. It isn't low carb but it is high fiber at least.

Swap beef for ground chicken. Season with lime juice, smoky chipotle paprika, cumin, celery salt, oregano, garlic, cinnamon and onion flakes. 24 g of protein for just 100 calories. Make a salad of shredded  lettuce, purple cabbage, carrots, cilantro, diced peppers, tomatoes and onions. Top with meat.

Skip the cheese and sour cream or use less to lose weight. This was hard at first, but I found I didn't even miss the cheese. Keto diet wisdom says parmesan is the best cheese for weight loss so try that. Top with salsa verde and a little peach pineapple chipotle salsa. Muy bien, taco salad!

Eating like this, m'dears was how I lost 100 pounds, diabetes and hypertension!

How I lost 35 pounds on a bread and water fast: spiritual fasting benefits

There's some controversy about intermittent fasting (AKA time restricted feeing or 5:2 diet) as a way to lose weight. Going without eating for long stretches, even if you're overweight, can be dangerous. But I found that a spiritual bread and water fast is beneficial health-wise and for weight loss. I lost 35 pounds without trying, thanks to spiritual fasting.

Spiritual benefits of intermittent fasting: I'm Catholic and 30 years ago, I started following a bread and water fast twice a week on an invitation from our Blessed Mother. Getting my mind off food helped me focus on God. Not thinking about weight loss helped too.

Emotional benefits of intermittent fasting. I thought I'd feel cranky and tired on a bread and water fast. Actually, I felt calmer on this 5:2 diet (five days normal eating, two days spiritual fasting). It was almost euphoric. I had strength to do my work and care for my kids.

Physical benefits of time restricted feeding. Research shows the intermittent aids obesity, diabetes, hypertension and lowers cholesterol. It boosts metabolism that being overweight slows down.

Weight loss benefits of spiritual fasting: I was overweight when I started the bread and water fast but weight loss never occurred to me. After a few months of this 5:2 diet, a friend said I looked a lot slimmer. I weighed myself and found I did lose weight: 35 pounds! I'd dropped two dress sizes and several inches off my waist.

Intermittent fasting guidelines. A bread and water fast is our calling as Catholics.  But you can amend if you're trying to lose weight with gluten free or keto diet, . Although some religious fasts require daily observance, I found that fasting on Wednesday and Friday works best. I used a modified time restricted feeding or 16:8 diet (8 hours eating, 16 not). Mine was more like 12 on, 12 off. I ate half a piece of bread every 1-2 hours, drank lots of water and took vitamin and took supplements. I didn't binge after fasting and ramped into full meals slowly (as I would after being ill).

Stay tuned for more updates on how I lost 100 pounds a few years ago.

How I lost 100 pounds with plant protein smoothies vs. juicing

Juicing has always been touted for weight loss and general health. But while I'm sure juicing good for you, I found protein smoothies more more effective to help me lose weight. Dr. Now of "My 600-lb Life" doesn't recommend protein shakes for treating obesity in his gastric bypass patients. That's probably the whey protein kind he objects to. But having a plant protein shake every morning is part of how I lost 100 pounds.

You may be wondering, does it need to be an either/or thing, juicing vs. protein smoothies for weight loss. Yes, it does and here's why. Juicing removes all the of membrane, pulp, seeds and well, fruit, from fruit. That's where the antioxidant and fat burner goodness live. Part of Dr. Now's gastric bypass "homework" on "My 600-lb Life" is to lose weight ahead of bariatric surgery. A great way to do that is to fat flush (sorry to be graphic but that's basically pooping it out). Fruit "guts" (all the aforementioned innards) work as natural fiber cleanses (laxatives). They can even help treat Type 2 diabetes.

So the problem with juicing in fighting obesity, is that it removes everything that aids weight loss and leaves only juice where most of the sugar and calories reside. So, how I lost 100 pounds with smoothies? Every day, I make a protein shake and cram that sucka full of high fiber fruit guts, LOL. Note certain fruits are better than others. The "My 600-lb Life" gastric bypass diet calls for cutting high sugar concentrate fruits, like oranges, grapes, bananas. I also eliminated stone fruits (peaches, mangoes, apricots) to treat diabetes and lose weight.

The best fruits I found for weight loss  are: apples, berries and grapefruit. Here's my "how I lost 100 pounds" smoothie recipe. 1 scoop pea protein powder (120 calories and 24 grams of plant protein), fresh spinach, half a grapefruit, fresh cranberries (in season) and berries (fresh or frozen). I get 12 oz of frozen mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries) from Dollar Tree.  Total calories: about 210. Drinking these plant protein shakes helped me manage obesity, avoid diabetes and lose weight.

Sick of dieting? I was sick from NOT working at weight loss

Are you trying to lose weight and sick of dieting? I feel ya! Counting calories, portion control, constantly worrying about weight loss gets old. But when I start thinking how tired I am, I remember how sick I was from not dieting. And I realize that boredom is something I can live with. Obesity is something I can't.

I have always been blessed with good health overall. But then I lost two stillborn babies, started taking the antidepressant Paxil and gained 100 pounds. My health quickly deteriorated. I went from low to high blood pressure, healthy sugar to pre-diabetes and good cholesterol to high LDL and poor HDL. My liver functioning stalled and sleep apnea got worse. My back problems escalated. Menopause was much more difficult. Depression and anxiety were off the charts.

When I finally got out of denial about my obesity, I was literally falling apart. BUT, good news, just a few months of weight loss and most all of these issues had or were starting to correct themselves. I had only lost about 25 pounds and hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol and hepatitis were in reverse. After my 100 pound weight loss, I felt like a new person and 20 years younger!

Several friends lost their battle with obesity. One was 64 and the other only 50. That's too young to die. So weight loss concerns aren't always fun. I may get sick of living with a diet  but it's so much better than dying from obesity.

My How-to-lose 100 pounds Diet: Fasting, religious diets, food swaps and more

In 2014, I lost 100 pounds and a lot of people have asked me, "so how'd ya get from <--- to ---->?"  I don't follow a specific weight loss diet because there's no one meal plan that hits everything I'm looking for.  Here are the basic tenets of my "how to lose 100 pounds" plan.

TAKE WHAT YOU CAN USE AND LEAVE THE REST

Al-Anon says "take what you like and leave the rest." My eating strategies are culled from a variety of weight loss programs. The Ketogenic (Keto) Diet, South Beach, hypertension DASH diet, paleo, Mediterranean Diet, Weight Watchers and more.

FOOD SWAPS

Some of my favorite weight loss tricks are food swaps. Using the "eat this, not that" and "hungry girl" concepts, I create recipes that trade fatty, sugary, salty, junky ingredients for healthier, low-calorie ones.

RELIGIOUS FASTS

I also follow many of the dietary fasts and restrictions of other religions. I'm not a Muslim, but Islam's halal foods are typically healthier. So are Jewish kosher foods. I am Catholic and observe Lent, but I try to do it all year-long. I try to live and eat simpler as Buddhists and Hindus do.

Even doctors recommend some fasting (I say "even" because I got very little help with weight loss from the medical community, aside from advice to get gastric bypass surgery. So I don't put much faith in traditional medicine.

VEGAN AND DIABETIC
Arguably, vegan or at least vegetarian is how we should all be eating. I'm by no means vegan, but I have tried to reduce processed foods. And I'm not diabetic but before I lost weight my glucose number was getting higher. I was tentatively diagnosed with pre-diabetes (aka insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome). So I try to avoid refined sugar as if I had Type 2 diabetes.

SUPERBOWL FOODS

"Bowling" is not only a sport but a trendy eating style just now. It just means eating food in bowls, typically based on salad and soup. I've begun eating less starch-based meals and foods on bread and swapped with vegetables. Our best meals feature high protein and lots of veggie varieties. And we love to make big pots of warm, nourishing soups bursting with herbs and low in sodium.

Diet tip of the day: Superfood kale slaw recipe for weight loss

I have lost 100 pounds using  a variety of diet tips. Some of my favorite weight loss tricks are food swaps. I trade fatty, sugary, salty, junky ingredients for healthier, low-calorie ones. For example, I adore pasta and potato salads and cole slaw. But made the usual way, sloppy with mayo, sugar, etc., they are calorie-bombs. So here's a to-die-for cole slaw recipe you could literally live on. It's vegan, full of superfoods and protein, diabetic, bad fat-free, ketogenic (high in good fatty acids), paleo, low in sodium, sugarfree and a meal in itself. Oh and it's super cheap to make.
<----It's pretty too--see the picture! (Those aren't bugs, lol, but seeds)

I have lost 100 pounds using a variety of diet tips and tricks.  (Those aren't bugs, lol, but seeds)

SUPERFOOD KALE SLAW BOWL

chopped kale with stems removed

coarsely grated carrots

chopped green and purple cabbage

cubed salad cucumbers (much tastier than other cukes)

chopped zucchini

sliced grape tomatoes

cashews and/or walnuts and/or almonds

pumpkin seeds

milled flaxseed

chia seeds

unsweetened dried strawberries, cranberries or blueberries

apple cider, acai or pomegranate vinegar

whole seed, Dijon or horseradish mustard

lemon juice and zest

100% juice, raw honey (omit if making vegan) or blue agave syrup (optional)

Chop, slice, toss ingredients, season to taste with vinegar, mustard juice or honey, and enjoy.

This kale slaw is sweet enough for me without any honey or juice. But you may like it sweeter. Go easy on the juice and dried fruit as they are full of sugar and will spike glucose levels.

Paxil Antidepressant Caused Weight Gain, Cholesterol Problems

10 years ago, in 2002, I began taking the antidepressant medication Paxil (aka Paroxetine) for depression and  anxiety. Now we know about Paxil's many many side effects. Weight gain and elevated LDL cholesterol are two problems commonly caused by the drug. When I began taking it, Paxil was a newer antidepressant and less was known about it. A therapist had recommended that I consult my physician about trying the then highly-touted Paxil for recurrent panic attacks.

Paxil did help me manage and process panic attacks and anxiety issues somewhat. However I became increasingly alarmed over the horror stories linking Paxil with infant birth defects, miscarriage and stillborn babies. Before I'd heard of Paxil's link to pregnancy problems, I'd taken Paxil during pregnancy (on my Ob-gyn's and midwife's recommendations). That pregnancy ended in stillbirth. It also caused me to put on a great deal of weight. I began to have trouble with cholesterol, pre-diabetes and liver problems (I'd never had any of these before Paxil). Read on for information on how I quit Paxil, got the cholesterol issues under control and am slowly taking the weight off.
